Cavities

Dr. Kevin Hogan • August 30, 2019

To prevent cavities from forming, as much as possible, consumption of sweets and candies should be minimized. Oral hygiene also needs to be top priority for prevention. Our teeth are constructed with enamel, dentin and cementum. When you eat sugar and do not remove the film of food with brushing, plaque sits and creates an organic acid. The acid that forms breaks down the enamel leading to serious medical consequences. When the enamel is dissolved by the acid, it causes the cavity, a hole, in your tooth.  Cavities from there, can become very serious, however, they can easily be put at bay by following some very simple guidelines.

Consider for example the simple art of oral hygiene. One necessary measure that everyone should follow is that teeth cavities will hardly be an issue if you brush your teeth regularly. You should also ideally pay close attention to the toothpaste that you choose. Always make sure that dentist approved toothpaste is utilized.

Flossing is also a very important part of oral hygiene. It should be ideally done before you go to bed. Flossing is a step most people neglect, but when you take the time to do so, you will realize how much plaque and debris you remove nightly.

We keep thinking that tooth decay is something that’ll never happen to us, but reality is most of us at some point do deal with decay and cavities. Take care of your smile, brush and floss on a daily basis to ensure you do not have cavities, and be sure to visit Dr. Hogan twice a year for a regular dental cleaning and checkup.  A little prevention and early intervention can prevent more extensive problems down the road.
